Sometime back RAC came up with the 05 GPS dashboard camera. Although you will find many companies releasing such products, none can give you more confidence than seeing the RAC name attached to your product. Being from a well-known automotive brand, the RAC 05 GPS has a few clever tricks up its sleeves. For starters, the video recording resolution is higher than some other dash cams and there are other additional features to keep you safe while driving.

  • 2.7inch widescreen
  • Super HD 1,296p dashboard camera
  • Proximity & Collision Detection
  • Automatic Event Recording
  • safety camera locations & warnings

1) Recording Formats & Quality

Shooting video at “Super HD” resolution is one of the most unique features of the RAC 05 GPS (which is 1,296p in this case). Actually, it is 2,304 x 1,296, which is still a 16:9 aspect ratio. The 1,296p format is recorded at a quite high 20Mbits/sec. It also offers support for Full HD modes at 30 and 45fps, with an HDR option for the 30fps, plus 720p at 60 and 30fps.

2) RAC Dash Cam Storage

It has the support of 8GB microSD card which gives you storage for 53 minutes at the Super HD resolution. Like most of the dashcams, once the storage is full, it will begin to record over the oldest files (FIFO method), unless they are marked as “incidents”. This can be done manually, or configure the 05 GPS’s accelerometer to put it on automatic version when it detects a rapid change in speed.

2) RAC Windscreen Mounting

Like most of the dashcams, the RAC 05 GPS is designed to hang down from the top of your windscreen, rather than stick up from the bottom probably because most people put their sat-navs in the bottom. A firm mount is provided by the suction cup with a micro-USB power connection on the top. The power cable is long and is designed to be routed around the windscreen so that it does not obscure your view of the road. Mountings haven’t been included to fix this cable, so you will need to buy a dual-USB power adapter or multi-way adapter to use your sat-nav at the same time as the 05 GPS.

3) The Safety Features

The 05 GPS comes with more offers than other dashcams rather than just the ability to record your journeys on video in various formats. Like some of the other dashcams, the 05 GPS offers extra safety features like a Lane Diversion Warning System (LDWS), and Forward Collision Warning System (FCWS) which use the camera as a sensor.

LDWS is potentially a life-saving feature as it is meant to kick in if it spots driver wandering from the lane, and has settings for the motorway, urban and rural roads. However, this might need calibration every time you remove it for safekeeping.

Further safety features include Forward Motion Detection Warning (FMDW), which alerts the driver when the car in front starts moving in stationary traffic. There’s also a Low Light Warning System (LLWS) that lets you know if you do not have your lights on in the dark and it seems to work pretty well.

Other useful features include the speed camera warnings, a function for which some people use their sat-navs even when they know exactly where they are going. The 05 GPS relies on the PocketGPSWorld CamerAlert system, which is a user-generated database with very good repute. You can also set warnings for when your speed goes above a fixed level from 20 to 70mph, as well as it prompts you to take rest if you have been driving between one and four hours. Most of the featured mentioned so far, are to be turned on manually.

Also, there is a Parking Monitor which detects a collision when your car is still and is intended to record if someone hits your vehicle when it is parked. However, if this feature is on, the RAC 05 GPS will repeatedly trigger a recording sequence as you carry it around and you will end up with lots of shots of the inside of your pocket.

  • Brilliant “Super HD” video recording
  • Safety Camera alerts
  • Great additional safety features

  • Bundled software quite unstable
  • Requires dual-power car adaptor for use with sat-nav
  • The utility of some safety features might be questionable

Final Verdict

ProofCam RAC 05 is particularly an impressive dash camera. It offers a wide range of safety features but one feature which makes RAC 05 a dashcam to choose is its video quality which sets it apart from the competition.
